Damit stellt sich die Frage: Was tun?
Erwartungsgemäss gibt es viele Möglichkeiten, viele Empfehlungen, viele Meinungen... Grundsätzlich kann man ...
- nichts tun. Die Website funktioniert weiter, allerdings gibt es weder Sicherheitsupdates noch neue Entwicklungen. Das ist erstmal die *kostengünstigste* Variante, ob sie sich auf längere Sicht rechnet, kann ich nicht voraussagen. Es gibt aber (wie bisher) Dienstleister, die Drupal-7 noch weiter supporten, gegen entsprechendes Entgelt. - aus einer Drupal-Seite eine ganz normale, statische Website machen. Dann kann man sich nicht mehr wie bisher anmelden und Inhalte erstellen oder bearbeiten. Vielleicht ist das eine Option für Websites, die nicht mehr gepflegt oder aktualisiert werden, aber zum Beispiel als Archiv erhalten werden sollen.

Da bietet sich Backdrop CMS an, weil es aus Drupal 7 entstanden ist. Backdrop-Benutzer müssen auch kein völlig neuen CMS erlernen, da vieles aus Drupal bekannt ist. Was man allerdings nicht von Drupal 7 nach Backdrop umziehen kann, ist das Design/Layout. Aber das gilt genauso beim Umzug auf jedes andere CMS und auch beim Upgrade auf höhere Drupal-Versionen.

Mein Senf dazu ;-))
Ein Upgrade auf die höheren Drupal-Versionen ist nach meiner Erfahrung nicht immer die optimale Lösung. Kleine Unternehmen, Vereine, Handwerksbetriebe, Künstler ... haben meistens kleinere Websites mit wenigen angemeldeten Benutzern. Die haben weder einen Bedarf nach neuen Enterprise-Features höherer Drupal-Versionen noch das entsprechende Enterprise-Budget. Ausserdem haben sie in der Regel ein Hostingpaket bei einem Provider ihrer Wahl gebucht und betreiben keine eigenen Server und sehen überhaupt nicht ein, warum das nun nicht mehr ausreichend sein sollte. Ich denke, für diesen Kundenkreis ist eine Migration zu BackdropCMS die sinnvollste Alternative. Wegen https://sucuri.net/reports/2023-hacked-website-report/ empfehle ich einen Umstieg auf Wordpress definitiv nicht.

Drupal 8 peilt ein anderes Marktsegment an
Drupal 6 und 7 passten noch gleichermaßen für "normale" Homepages wie für komplexe Portale. Bei Drupal 8 schaut das schon ganz anders aus. Es hat höhere Anforderungen ans Webhosting und die Entwicklung ist um einiges aufwändiger. Das macht es für kleinere Webseiten, für Vereinshomepages, für kleinere Blogs usw. weitgehend unbrauchbar.
